Overview
- House Republicans, at the NRCC’s annual fundraiser in Washington on Wednesday, unveiled a new “America First Award” and displayed a golden eagle statue as Speaker Mike Johnson named President Trump the first recipient.
- Johnson said the award is a new honor that the committee plans to present each year.
- Johnson also told donors the NRCC raised a record $18.5 million in the first quarter.
- Trump followed with roughly an hour of remarks that attacked Democrats, promoted voter ID and limits on mail ballots, and touched on the Iran war, with some outlets reporting he slurred words during parts of the speech.
- The presentation drew quick ridicule from TV hosts and Democratic lawmakers, who compared it to recent bespoke honors for Trump such as FIFA’s Peace Prize and said the tribute felt out of touch during a partial government shutdown and an ongoing conflict with Iran.
