Hornsea 3 Connects First Export Cable as Foundation Work Nears

The 2.9 GW Ørsted project enters offshore construction to advance UK clean‑energy targets.

Overview

  • Ørsted linked the first export cable from the North Sea site to the UK coast, creating the route for power to reach the onshore converter station at Swardeston in Norfolk.
  • Foundation installation is scheduled to start in April with Cadeler’s Wind Ally for XXL monopiles, Wind Orca for secondary structures, and the service vessel Esvagt Froude mobilising from European ports.
  • Jan De Nul is installing the subsea export system supplied by NKT, which began manufacturing several years ago and expects to complete the cable deliveries this summer.
  • The first six monopiles arrived at Teesside from Haizea’s Bilbao plant, and Dajin Heavy Industry has shipped further units from China as Ørsted backfills scope after ending a SeAH Wind contract due to production issues.
  • Hornsea 3 will deploy 197 Siemens Gamesa 14 MW turbines for 2.9 GW of capacity, target operations in 2027, and support thousands of jobs with long‑term operations based in Grimsby.
