Overview
- Hoover Dam officials announced the enormous flag was removed after suffering an unexpected tear and did not disclose how or when repairs will be completed.
- The flag had been installed in late May to mark Memorial Day and America250 and to serve as a centerpiece of a summer tourism program.
- Earlier this month the flag was lowered because of high winds, a weather event officials cited before the tear was discovered.
- To sustain visitor programming while the flag is out, the dam will run red-white-and-blue LED lighting each night through July 4 and keep top-of-dam and Memorial Bridge walkways open until 10 p.m.
- The display required complex rigging and power systems for a 150-by-300-foot banner and took place against the backdrop of low Lake Mead levels that shape how visitors see the site.
