Honda Unveils Base Station, a Lightweight Modular Camper for Compact SUVs and EVs

Production, pricing, timing remain undecided pending evaluation.

Overview

  • Developed by Honda’s U.S. R&D teams in California and Ohio, the Base Station prototype was shown to media and is now publicly revealed.
  • Designed for easy towability by compact crossovers and EVs, with Honda citing the CR-V and Prologue as well as Toyota’s RAV4.
  • The pop-up roof creates seven feet of standing height, and a futon-to-queen bed plus an optional kids’ bunk allow sleeping for four.
  • Removable side windows can be swapped for accessories including an exterior kitchenette with running water and induction cooktop, an air conditioner, and an outdoor shower.
  • Integrated solar panels, a lithium battery, and an inverter enable zero-emissions campsite power, with external hookups or a generator for longer stays; outlets report a target weight around or under 1,500 pounds and a footprint that fits a standard garage.
