Honda Files Design Patent for ADV160 in India

The move protects Honda’s styling, leaving open the possibility of a future launch without confirming one.

Overview

  • Multiple Indian outlets reported that Honda has registered a design patent for the ADV160, a development first published on Monday and followed up by further coverage through May 27.
  • The ADV160 is an existing production maxi-scooter sold in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia and uses a 157cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine rated at about 16 hp and 14.7 Nm.
  • Published specifications from the production model list an underbone chassis, 14-inch front and 13-inch rear wheels, 780 mm seat height and a kerb weight near 133 kg.
  • Reports agree on many features such as a full digital instrument cluster, LED lighting, traction control, Honda Smart Key and USB charging but differ on the rear brake setup with some sources saying a rear disc and others a rear drum.
  • Analysts say the ADV160 would slot between India’s Yamaha Aerox 155 and Hero Xoom 160 if sold locally, yet observers stress Honda routinely files patents for IP protection and the company has not confirmed any India launch.
