Overview
- Homebridge, which released version 2.0 on Monday after years in beta, adds initial support for the Matter smart home standard.
- The software can now act as a Matter bridge so devices show up with the right type in Apple Home, including robot vacuums as vacuums.
- Devices connected through Homebridge plugins can also appear in other Matter apps such as Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant.
- Full access across other controllers will roll out over time because individual plugins must be updated before they work through Matter.
- Homebridge is a free, open-source server that runs locally on hardware like a Raspberry Pi with more than 4,000 plugins, which stays useful as Apple and manufacturers adopt new Matter types at a slow pace.
