Home Affairs Expands Smart ID Service to 110 Bank Branches as FNB Joins Rollout

Bank-based applications speed up Smart ID replacements with quick, biometric checks.

Overview

  • The Department of Home Affairs says 110 bank branches are now live for Smart ID services after First National Bank joined Capitec and Standard Bank.
  • The 110 sites lift access points by 44% compared with the 248 Home Affairs offices that already offer Smart ID services.
  • The live network spans 77 Capitec branches, 30 Standard Bank branches and three FNB branches across South Africa.
  • More than 25,000 applications have been processed so far, with the system handling more than one per minute.
  • People can replace a Green ID book or a lost Smart ID in about five minutes with no booking or paperwork, and the department plans to add first‑time IDs, passports, courier delivery and banking‑app applications as Absa and Nedbank complete testing toward a 2029 goal of 1,000 branches.
