Home Affairs’ Bank-Integrated Smart ID Service Goes Live at Select Branches

A secure API link lets banks process applications in minutes to speed the replacement of the vulnerable green ID book.

Overview

  • Capitec and Standard Bank are the first live partners, with services available at nine branches now and set to reach 17 by the end of the week.
  • The initial phase covers conversions from the green ID book to Smart ID cards and re-issues for existing cardholders, with no bookings or paper forms required.
  • FNB says it is in final testing and plans a broader rollout, indicating it will initially charge only the standard R140 Department of Home Affairs fee.
  • Capitec reports sub–five-minute, self-service processing on AWS-backed terminals and adds a R10 service fee on top of the R140 DHA fee.
  • The phased programme aims to cut queues at 349 Home Affairs offices, expand services during 2026, and scale to 1,000 participating bank branches by 2029.
