Holiday Traffic Overloads Hamburg Motorways

Heavy outbound travel is causing long queues on Hamburg approaches and forcing police to manage incidents and warn drivers.

Overview

  • Traffic control reported about 10 kilometres of northbound queue on the A7 between Autobahnkreuz Südwest and the Elbtunnel and roughly 4 kilometres of southbound queue between Volkspark and the Elbtunnel.
  • An officer said the A1 southbound near Scharbeutz resembles “a huge parking lot” with traffic standing for about 10 kilometres between Scharbeutz and Ratekau.
  • Multiple build-ups are reported on the A1 between Hamburg and the Maschener Kreuz and from Maschen toward Bremen, and a traffic accident at the Maschener Kreuz is currently worsening flows.
  • The A24 toward Ratzeburg remains comparatively calm but the Autobahnrevier in Neumünster says traffic between Neumünster and Hamburg is slow and congested in both directions.
  • Police and the Hamburg Verkehrsleitzentrale are actively monitoring conditions, coordinating incident response, and urging drivers to expect delays and exercise patience during the Ferienbeginn travel surge.
