Holger Rune to Return in Denmark’s Davis Cup After 11‑Month Achilles Layoff

Denmark is using the home Davis Cup tie as a controlled match test to assess Rune's repaired left Achilles, restart his match fitness, begin rebuilding his ATP ranking.

Overview

  • Rune will make his competitive return this weekend in Hillerod at the Davis Cup World Group I play-off, opening against Iliyan Radulov and slated to play Grigor Dimitrov later in the tie.
  • The 23-year-old missed roughly 11 months after rupturing his proximal left Achilles tendon at the 2025 Stockholm Open and having surgery, and he has repeatedly delayed earlier comeback targets because he did not feel ready.
  • Rune says he does not know how his body will react to match play but feels well prepared after months of staged rehab and fine-tuning training.
  • Peers have publicly backed his recovery: Dimitrov has followed Rune’s rehab closely and expressed confidence in a full return, and Rune has recently practised with Carlos Alcaraz as part of his build-up.
  • Rune has fallen well down the ATP list (reported around world No. 133) and will use the Davis Cup to gain match time, test his movement under pressure, and inform the timing of his next tour events.
