The opening weekend drew more than 12,000 visitors after upgrades to safeguard 91 sarcophagi, modernizing access throughout.

Overview

  • Doors reopened with a free open day on February 28, where visitors queued up to an hour to enter the redesigned crypt.
  • A fest service on March 1 featured a sermon by Dorothee Wüst, with remarks from Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer and Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner.
  • The refurbishment added climate control, a revised visitor route, an elevator for barrier-free entry, an interactive model and touchpads, and repositioned the coffins.
  • Standard admission now costs €15, up from €10 before the closure, according to Dom preacher Stefan Scholpp.
  • The Hohenzollerngruft is one of Europe’s largest dynastic burial sites, holding 91 coffins from the 16th to early 20th centuries, including Friedrich I and Sophie Charlotte.
