Overview
- Gov. Katie Hobbs rejected Senate Bill 1010 on Friday, halting a legislative plan to add Charlie Kirk’s name to the Loop 202 freeway.
- In her veto letter, Hobbs said the Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names is the proper channel for road naming because it evaluates requests outside of partisan fights.
- Charlie Kirk founded Turning Point USA, built ties in the Phoenix area, and was shot and killed on Sept. 10, 2025, while speaking at a Utah college.
- The veto follows her March 6 rejection of a specialty license plate for Kirk that would have directed $17 from each plate to Turning Point USA’s nonprofit arm.
- Bill sponsor and Senate President Warren Petersen criticized the decision and pointed to the Congressman Ed Pastor Freeway as an example of Arizona honoring figures from both parties.
