HMCS Charlottetown Departs Halifax for Six-Month Indo-Pacific Deployment

The mission supports UN sanctions enforcement to deepen allied cooperation in a region Canadian officials call central to national security.

Overview

  • The Halifax-class frigate is sailing in support of Operations HORIZON and NEON, which frame Canada’s military role in the Indo-Pacific.
  • Under Operation NEON, the ship will conduct surveillance to detect sanctions evasion at sea, including prohibited ship-to-ship transfers linked to North Korea.
  • The deployment includes multinational exercises and port visits designed to strengthen interoperability and diplomatic ties with partners.
  • Roughly 240 personnel, including Royal Canadian Navy sailors and Royal Canadian Air Force aviators, are embarked with a CH-148 Cyclone helicopter after months of training.
  • Rear-Admiral Josée Kurtz and Commander Jonathan Maurice highlighted Canada’s intent to maintain a near-persistent presence and to demonstrate operational excellence alongside allies.
