HISD Sets Feb. 26 Vote on Plan to Close or Co‑Locate 12 Schools

Most displaced students would move to lower-rated campuses, according to a Houston Chronicle analysis.

Overview

  • The district published campus-by-campus reassignments, including Henderson to Bruce, Port Houston to Pleasantville, Burrus to Kennedy, Franklin to Gallegos, Briscoe to Carrillo, and Ross to Roosevelt or C. Martinez, with co-locations for Fleming and McReynolds at Mickey Leland YMCPA, Cage at Lantrip, and Hobby split between MLK Early Childhood Center and Lawson; Gulfton Middle College students would go to Liberty High School.
  • If approved, closures and co-locations would take effect at the end of the 2025–26 school year, with affected campuses operating normally through this year as planning and family meetings proceed.
  • District leaders cite falling enrollment, underused and aging facilities, and long-term costs, noting voters rejected a 2024 bond that would have directed more than $400 million to these campuses, including four full rebuilds now off the table.
  • Roughly 500 employees could be affected, with certified teachers rated at least “Progressing 2” guaranteed placement in HISD and reassignments communicated by April 17; a priority placement survey is due March 6 and the open transfer window runs April 27 to May 16.
  • HISD promises transition supports such as campus meetings, tours, meet-and-greets, and dedicated support teams, and says special education services will follow IEPs, transportation will follow existing eligibility, and class sizes will be managed at receiving schools.
