Himanta Biswa Sarma Opens Assam’s First Science City in Sonapur

Officials pitch the facility as a catalyst for scientific temperament among youth.

Overview

  • Built for about Rs 300 crore on roughly 82 acres, the complex was developed jointly by the Assam government and the National Council of Science Museums under the Ministry of Culture.
  • The site opens with the Eureka and Space Odyssey galleries featuring AR and VR experiences such as space exploration, a virtual moon tour, Mission Mangal, and views of Kaziranga National Park.
  • A VR recreation of the Battle of Saraighat is included to connect scientific learning with regional history and culture.
  • The Chief Minister also virtually inaugurated district Science Centres in Amingaon, Majuli, Silchar, Kaliabor and Bongaigaon, each equipped with science galleries, digital planetariums and auditoriums.
  • Planned additions include a Science Innovation centre and a Science Park, and the Chief Minister called for periodic exhibit upgrades and an expert advisory committee to keep the facility current.
