Himachal BJP Suspends 10 Leaders for Contesting Against Official Candidates

The crackdown signals a push to prevent vote-splitting before the May 17 local polls.

Overview

  • State president Rajeev Bindal ordered the immediate suspension of ten primary members across Dharamshala, Solan and Nahan for running against party nominees.
  • Those suspended in Dharamshala include former mayor Omkar Nehria and former deputy mayor Tejendra Kaur, who filed as independent candidates against the BJP’s picks.
  • The Solan unit saw four members suspended, including Gaurav Rajput and Rajni Rajput from Ward 3 and Rampal and Mukesh Verma from Ward 7, while Leela Saini was suspended in Nahan.
  • The BJP has also asked the State Election Commission to transfer two Sirmaur officials, alleging misuse of their posts and a conflict of interest where one official’s spouse is contesting a panchayat race.
  • Local body voting across four municipal corporations, 25 municipal councils and 22 nagar panchayats is slated for May 17, as the BJP enforces discipline and steps up attacks on the Sukhu-led Congress government.
