Overview
- Hill at Sims opens to the public on Saturday, May 30, as Sunnyside’s first new major park in roughly 50 years.
- The finished 100‑acre site features The Brown Foundation Hilltop Pavilion on a 60‑foot hill, nearly five miles of paved and dirt trails, the Dr. Alma Allen pedestrian bridge, a fishing pier, outdoor classroom areas, and six large murals.
- The project cost nearly $30 million and was paid for with about $22 million in public funds and roughly $8 million raised privately by the Houston Parks Board led by The Brown Foundation.
- Built inside a Harris County Flood Control District detention basin, the park is designed to hold about 325 million gallons of stormwater and to reduce flood risk for thousands of nearby homes.
- Design and programming grew from more than 20 community meetings and input from over 700 Sunnyside residents, and the park links to the Bayou Greenways trail network and about 12 local schools, giving roughly 50,000 nearby residents new access to greenspace.
