Hiker Found Dead in Glacier National Park After Suspected Bear Attack

Authorities have closed sections of the Mt. Brown Trail during a safety review.

Overview

  • Search teams found the hiker’s body Wednesday around noon about 2.5 miles up the Mt. Brown Trail and roughly 50 feet off the path in dense timber.
  • Park officials said the injuries were consistent with a bear encounter and they will withhold the victim’s name for 72 hours after notifying family.
  • Rangers had been looking for 33-year-old Anthony Pollio of Fort Lauderdale, whose car was located at Lake McDonald Lodge after his last message Sunday night.
  • Sections of the Mt. Brown corridor are closed as wildlife and law enforcement staff check for bear activity, document the scene, and continue the investigation.
  • If confirmed as a bear fatality, this would be Glacier’s first since 1998, and a separate Yellowstone attack earlier in the week seriously injured two hikers near Old Faithful.
