Hiker Dies After Fall on Zion’s Angels Landing

Officials later reopened the routes following the rescue.

Overview

  • Zion National Park reported a fatal fall on Angels Landing and closed Angels Landing, Scout Lookout, and the West Rim during the response.
  • The park said the routes reopened after crews completed their work at the scene.
  • The Department of the Interior said the response involved the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the county medical examiner, Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue, and Kane County Search and Rescue.
  • Angels Landing includes a narrow ridge with fixed chains known as the Hogsback, and the park runs a permit lottery to curb crowding on the route.
  • Park records and past reports note at least 18 deaths on the trail over the years, and a previously scheduled maintenance closure is set for April 20–23.
