High-Speed Chase Ends in Multi-Vehicle Crash on Loop 202, Suspect in Custody

Mesa police say the pursuit followed a report of a driver slumped at the wheel and left westbound lanes closed while investigators reconstruct the crash

Overview

  • The pursuit began Monday afternoon after officers got reports of a man slumped over a steering wheel near Dobson Road and US 60 and later located the vehicle near Dobson and University Drive.
  • When officers tried to stop the car the driver fled at high speed and drove recklessly onto the Loop 202 Red Mountain, prompting a police chase.
  • The chase ended near the 24th Street exit in a multi-vehicle crash that involved the suspect’s car, a Mesa patrol vehicle, and several uninvolved motorists.
  • The suspect was taken into custody at the scene and both he and one Mesa officer were treated at hospitals for minor injuries while no uninvolved motorists suffered major injuries.
  • Westbound lanes at the Mini Stack were closed and traffic diverted as Mesa Police and ADOT processed the scene and launched an active investigation to reconstruct the pursuit and determine charges.
