Overview
- The Lake Havasu crash, which occurred Sept. 12, left two Lake Havasu City residents dead after a 2019 36-foot Douglas Marine boat struck a peninsula, became airborne and landed in a boat-in campsite north of Cattail Cove State Park.
- First responders discovered the boat upside down on dry land, performed CPR and life-saving measures at the scene, and later identified the victims as 65-year-old Charles Romer and 59-year-old Jennifer Luzzi.
- Deputies from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office Division of Boating Safety are leading an active investigation into the crash and have released only preliminary findings about speed and impact with no determinations about operator error, mechanical failure or charges.
- Separately, Bullhead City officers recovered the body of 55-year-old Melissa Marie Miley from the Colorado River after a witness reported she entered the water on Sept. 11 and did not resurface.
- Lake Havasu is a busy recreational area for high-performance boats and the twin incidents prompted multi-agency responses; investigators and local officials may review boating safety rules, campsite placement and enforcement as they continue to probe causes and risks.
