High Fuel Costs Push UK Drivers Toward Walking and Cycling, Poll Finds

Cycling UK seeks bike subsidies with road safety upgrades in response to higher pump prices.

Overview

  • Nearly a third of drivers say they now walk or cycle more to cut fuel spending, with another 15% considering the switch, according to a YouGov survey of 2,099 UK adults.
  • RAC Fuel Watch reports petrol at about 158p per litre and diesel near 191p, which remains well above late February levels when prices were lower by roughly 25p for petrol and 49p for diesel.
  • Cycling UK is urging national and devolved governments to fund access to bikes and e-bikes and to improve local road safety so active travel is a practical option for everyday trips.
  • Drivers also report other money-saving steps that reduce car use, including going out less (27%), using public transport (23%), cutting other spending to afford fuel (19%), and car-sharing (9%).
  • Prices have dipped slightly in recent days, and RAC’s Simon Williams says further small falls are possible, though volatility linked to Middle East tensions may keep pump costs elevated.
