Overview
- Herzog completed a two-day state visit to Romania on June 28–29 that began in Iași, where he toured the Holocaust museum, unveiled a memorial plaque and joined the reburial of 22 victims recently identified from the 1941 Iași pogrom.
- At the Iași ceremony he called for stronger Holocaust education and legal measures to stop antisemitism, saying younger generations must be taught how hatred begins and where it can lead.
- In Bucharest Herzog held talks with President Nicușor Dan to expand bilateral cooperation in technology, cyber and AI, security, agriculture and tourism and to promote greater economic and investment ties between the countries.
- Speaking to Romania’s parliament Herzog described the Israel–Lebanon memorandum of understanding signed in Washington as a potential cornerstone for peace and urged the EU and international community to back its implementation, including steps to remove Hezbollah’s military threat as a precondition.
- Herzog framed Israel’s current conflict as part of a wider challenge from Iran and its proxies, urged European leaders to reject boycotts of Israel, and signaled that Romanian backing could help translate the MOU into diplomatic, security and economic support for Lebanon and Israel.
