Heroic Launcher Team Builds Xodus to Bring Xbox PC and Game Pass Titles to Linux and Mac
The open-source project aims to reproduce Xbox authentication and package handling so modern GDK/MSIXVC games can run outside the Windows Xbox app.
Overview
- Xodus is an open-source effort led by the developers of the Heroic Game Launcher to reverse-engineer and emulate Microsoft runtime pieces that block Xbox PC and Game Pass games from running on Linux and macOS.
- The team reports concrete progress on non-graphics barriers, including a working Xbox login flow, license verification, MSIXVC package access and decryption, an open-source xgameruntime.dll implementation, and custom Wine and Proton forks.
- Xodus uses proxy libraries and API interception to supply valid Xbox Live tokens and plans to emulate the Xbox Gaming Runtime inside Wine before attempting to launch games locally with existing translation stacks.
- The project targets modern GDK-based titles packaged as MSIXVC and explicitly excludes older UWP-era releases; running games will still require Wine, DXVK, or VKD3D/Proton to handle Windows APIs and graphics translation.
- If Xodus completes runtime emulation and integration with translation layers it could let Linux and Mac owners install and run PC Game Pass titles locally, a change that would broaden options for Steam Deck and other Linux gamers and rely on sustained community development rather than official Microsoft support.
