Helicopter Team Rescues Two Hikers Stranded on Icy Pico Polvoreda

Castilla y León's 1-1-2 center oversaw the mission using protocol-led air rescue.

Overview

  • The hikers, women aged 22 and 27, called 1-1-2 at 14:25 on Monday reporting they could not descend due to ice and snow in Valdepiélago (León).
  • The Junta de Castilla y León rescue helicopter deployed two technicians, including a nurse, who reached the pair via winch and short-rope maneuvers.
  • Both women were evacuated uninjured and were set down in Rodillazo, in the municipality of Cármenes.
  • Guardia Civil was notified and, by protocol, Cistierna firefighters were informed, while no Sacyl medical assistance was requested as the hikers reported no injuries.
  • The operation followed a Sunday airlift in Corrales de Duero in which a 71-year-old hunter with an ankle injury was winched out and transferred via Peñafiel for hospital care.
