Heatwave Persists as Westerly System Brings Storms and Flood Risk to Pakistan

Westerly-driven storms raise flash-flood risk for glaciated highlands as heavy rain moves into mountain basins.

Overview

  • The Pakistan Meteorological Department says mainly hot, dry weather will continue across most of the country while a westerly system drives isolated rain-windstorms, thunderstorms and possible hail in northern and western highlands.
  • A developing glacial-lake outburst flood and flash-flood alert has been issued for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan because heavy mountain rainfall could destabilize glacial lakes and trigger sudden downstream floods.
  • Measured rainfall over recent 24-hour periods has confirmed the instability with examples including Upper Dir (about 20 mm), Gilgit (12–15 mm), Bunji and Chilas (around 9 mm) and Quetta (9 mm).
  • Cities such as Islamabad and Rawalpindi can expect short-lived cooling from intermittent storms and gusty winds but also face local hazards from strong gusts, heavy downpours and isolated hail.
  • Southern and central Pakistan, especially upper Sindh, remain under an intense heatwave with daytime temperatures well above normal and little relief expected there while the pre-monsoon pattern of continental heat plus episodic westerly disturbances continues.
