Heatwave Forces Early School Hours in Jharkhand, Patna and Lucknow

Authorities say shifting to morning classes protects students from 40°C-plus conditions.

Overview

  • Jharkhand has moved all schools to early hours with KG–Class 8 running 7:00–11:30 and Classes 9–12 running 7:00–12:00, with staff staying until 1:00 and the order in force until further notice.
  • Patna’s district magistrate, using Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, ordered no classes after 11:30 for up to Class 5 and after 12:30 for up to Class 8, with the directive active through April 25.
  • Lucknow set a 7:30–12:30 window for pre-primary to Class 8 starting April 22, with no teaching after 12:30 until further orders across government and private schools.
  • Officials cite India Meteorological Department warnings and temperatures topping 40°C in multiple districts, including 44°C in Daltonganj, and they directed shade, safe drinking water and fewer outdoor activities.
  • Similar heat responses are rolling out in other states, with revised hours or advisories reported in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand, often keeping teachers on site after students leave.
