Health Minister Stéphanie Rist Wins Loiret By-Election to Retain Post

Her victory upholds the pledge that she would remain in the cabinet only if re-elected.

Overview

  • Rist, the Renaissance candidate, took 62.1% of the vote against 37.9% for the Rassemblement National’s Tiffanie Rabault, according to official results.
  • Turnout was very low, with 69.6% abstention in the runoff after an already high 70.6% a week earlier.
  • The by-election was triggered because her designated substitute, Stéphane Chouin, refused to take her National Assembly seat after her October 2025 appointment to the government.
  • By staying in the cabinet, she will hand the Assembly seat to new substitute Marie-Philippe Lubet, the Horizons mayor of Saint-Denis-en-Val.
  • A rheumatologist first elected in 2017, Rist led the first round and had previously defeated Rabault in the 2024 legislative runoff.
