HBO Max Is Making the First Authorized Gilmore Girls Documentary

It promises creator-led access and never-before-seen footage that could reshape how the show’s history is told.

Overview

  • HBO Max announced on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026 that an untitled, authorized Gilmore Girls documentary is in production for the streamer.
  • The film will be told from the perspective of creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino and will feature Lauren Graham alongside other key cast and crew.
  • Director Bonni Cohen is attached and the project is produced by This Machine Filmworks in association with Warner Horizon Unscripted Television with multiple executive producers listed.
  • HBO Max says the documentary will include never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage and original script pages, but it has not announced a title or release date.
  • The authorized film arrives alongside a separate crowdfunded independent documentary (Drink Coffee, Talk Fast) and a Sherman-Palladino/Graham nonfiction book due fall 2027, and it could set the official archival narrative and boost renewed streaming interest in the series.
