Hazel Park Police Probe Five Break-Ins at Vacant, Rental Homes After $10K in Appliances Stolen

Police say frequent comings and goings at vacant listings can hide thefts, prompting a request for resident surveillance video.

Overview

  • Investigators say five burglaries occurred between Oct. 16 and Oct. 22 across the 23000 block of Vance, 300 block of Chestnut, 23300 block of Hazelwood, 1100 block of East Hayes, and 1300 block of East Harry.
  • Thieves forced entry through doors or windows and stole washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves and a new air conditioner worth more than $10,000.
  • Three of the targeted homes were listed for rent, which police note can reduce neighbors’ suspicion because activity at those properties appears routine.
  • Officers have canvassed affected areas and are seeking tips or video; residents can contact the Hazel Park Detective Bureau at 248-542-6161.
  • Local reporting found three affected addresses share a property manager, though police have not confirmed any connection between the cases.
