Hawk Fire Burns More Than 10,500 Acres Near Reno, Forces Mass Evacuations

Fueled by strong winds, dry fuels drove the blaze into residential neighborhoods and triggered a state emergency with National Guard support.

Overview

  • The fire began Saturday near Hawk Meadow Trail on Peavine Mountain and grew rapidly to more than 10,500 acres while containment remained at 0 percent.
  • Washoe County officials ordered roughly 14,000 homes to evacuate under expanding Level 3 “Go Now” zones that reached the edge of the University of Nevada, Reno campus.
  • Local, state and federal agencies deployed about 400 personnel plus aircraft, and Governor Joe Lombardo activated the Nevada National Guard to provide helicopter firefighting and security for evacuated areas.
  • Officials say the wind-driven blaze has already destroyed structures in mountain neighborhoods, forced hospital and airport operational changes, closed portions of U.S. 395, and left thousands without power.
  • Investigators have not determined the cause, and the incident adds strain to an already busy regional fire season that has diverted resources from earlier August fires.
