Hasbro Touts Exodus as 'D&D in Space' to Fill the Mass Effect-Style RPG Gap

The company is betting on a new story-driven space opera that it plans to spotlight with bigger gameplay showings in early June.

Overview

  • Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks said Exodus is “effectively D&D in space” and argued the sci-fi RPG niche needs a fresh, Mass Effect–like entry.
  • Archetype Entertainment, a Wizards of the Coast studio founded by former BioWare developers, is building the game with writing by Drew Karpyshyn and a role for Matthew McConaughey.
  • Archetype has been posting short gameplay clips and plans extended showcases around the Summer Game Fest weekend at events like the Future Games Show and the PC Gaming Show.
  • Footage so far shows cover-based combat, branching dialogue, and exploration that uses a grappling hook and “shaper” abilities to break walls and create bridges.
  • The release is targeted for early 2027, and it anchors Hasbro’s larger video game push after wins like Baldur’s Gate 3 and setbacks such as cut teams and a canceled D&D project.
