Haryana Clears Prosecution of Ex-CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda in Panchkula Plots Case

The decision unlocks the next steps in both the CBI and ED cases.

Overview

  • The Haryana government, which granted prosecution sanction Tuesday, set up the CBI to file a chargesheet in a Panchkula trial court.
  • Sanction covers Bhupinder Singh Hooda and former HUDA officials Subhash Chandra Kansal and Bharat Bhushan Taneja, while ex-IAS officer D. P. S. Nagal’s case has been sent to the Centre’s DoPT for approval under the anti-graft law.
  • The ED filed a money-laundering case in February 2021, and a special court paused that trial on May 15, 2024 until the CBI submitted its chargesheet, which means the PMLA case can now restart.
  • CBI findings say allotment rules were changed on January 24, 2012 after the January 6, 2012 deadline, leading to 14 plots in 2013 going to ineligible applicants at prices below market rates.
  • Hooda said he has full faith in the judiciary, and the sanction is a legal go-ahead that permits prosecution but does not determine guilt.
