Hanwha Signs U.S. MOUs on Warship Design and AReS Missile Motor

The move signals a push to build a U.S.–Korea supply chain for upcoming defense programs.

Overview

  • Hanwha Aerospace and Northrop Grumman signed a Tuesday agreement at Sea-Air-Space to co-develop the first-stage solid rocket motor for AReS, a ground-launched long-range missile.
  • Hanwha Ocean also inked a pact with LeidosGibbs & Cox to tailor ship designs to U.S. Navy standards and to co-develop next-generation naval platforms.
  • The ship deal highlights plans to set up a resilient supply chain that links South Korean and U.S. production sites for faster builds and easier upkeep.
  • The partners said the AReS first-stage effort is in early development, with a joint demonstration targeted in 2027, and they framed the work as a path to speed future mass production.
  • Hanwha added a Canada tie-up as Hanwha Corporation signed an Alberta agreement covering energy, defense, and shipbuilding, which supports its bid activity and local industry goals in Canada’s submarine push.
