Overview
- A traffic stop for a registration violation led to the arrest of 37-year-old Stacey Huffman, who on Saturday, May 30 removed one hand from his cuffs while seated in a Dallas squad car and later climbed into the driver's seat.
- Officers pulled the patrol car over on northbound I‑35 near Illinois Avenue to try to restrain Huffman, and while both were momentarily outside the vehicle Huffman drove off with one officer jumping into the back seat.
- The officer in the back deployed a Taser that failed after Huffman pulled the wires free, then struck Huffman with his duty weapon as Huffman drove erratically and threw the officer around the rear cabin.
- The patrol car traveled roughly 1,000 feet at about 50 mph before Huffman opened the door and jumped from the moving vehicle, was rendered unconscious, and was taken to a hospital where he remained admitted as of June 4 while the officer was released.
- Dallas police released portions of the video, opened a Special Investigations Unit probe, notified the Dallas County district attorney and the Office of Community Police Oversight, and prosecutors expect to add unauthorized-use and escape charges when Huffman is medically cleared, raising questions about cuffing and in‑car safety procedures and use-of-force review.
