Hamburg Weddings Surge in 2024 as Schleswig-Holstein Hits Four-Decade Low

New Statistikamt Nord data show a sharp regional split in marriage trends across northern Germany.

  • Hamburg recorded 5,320 marriages in 2024, up 18.3% or 821 from 2023, marking the city’s highest total since 2019.
  • Schleswig-Holstein logged 15,073 marriages, a 6.4% decline from 2023 and the lowest annual figure since 1985.
  • In Hamburg, August saw the most weddings with 601 ceremonies, while January had the fewest with 228.
  • District results in Schleswig-Holstein varied, with steep drops in Steinburg (−15.3%), Herzogtum Lauenburg (−13.5%) and Kiel (−11.4%), and small increases in Lübeck (+1.8%) and Dithmarschen (+0.3%).
  • Divorces decreased slightly in both areas: Schleswig-Holstein had 4,984 cases (2.1% less) with 4,125 children affected and 23.6% from marriages of 20+ years, while Hamburg had 2,613 cases with 1,846 children affected and 22.1% lasting at least two decades.
