Hamburg State Opera Unveils 2026/27 Season With Tent Run During Pit Renovation

The plan keeps performances going by turning a circus tent into a temporary stage during repairs to the orchestra pit.

Overview

  • Hamburg State Opera, which announced the plan Tuesday, will shift shows to the Kuppel Hamburg tent from May 22 to July 4, 2027.
  • The tent run opens with the world premiere of Störtebeker, a new family opera by Gordon Kampe and Martin G. Berger, with John Neumeier’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream returning from June 19.
  • The 2026/27 lineup features nine new productions, led by Verdi’s Macbeth on September 12, plus Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, and 15 revivals with Omer Meir Wellber leading Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, Die Walküre and Carmen.
  • The Philharmonic State Orchestra will mark Beethoven’s 200th year of remembrance with ZeitenLos in 2027, reordering symphony movements across ten concerts under Wellber.
  • Ticket pre-sales for the tent opened April 7, general season sales start June 1, and management reports more than 40% growth in under‑30 purchases while holding full attendance figures until season’s end.
