Overview
- Hamas announced on Monday that it had dissolved the 15-member committee that ran Gaza since 2007 and said it would transfer day-to-day governance to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG).
- The NCAG’s chairman Ali Shaath says the technocratic body is ready to assume administration but the committee and its members remain outside Gaza and have not been allowed to enter the territory.
- Hamas has not agreed to disarm and says it will keep weapons until a recognised Palestinian authority is established and an Israeli military withdrawal begins, a position Israeli officials say makes the dissolution largely symbolic.
- Key mechanisms needed to move the Board of Peace phased plan forward — verified weapons custody, an international stabilisation force and NCAG access — have not been implemented, leaving the second phase stalled.
- The change comes as Gaza faces severe humanitarian strain and expanded Israeli control of large parts of the territory, and international mediators including Egypt, Qatar and Turkey continue talks under the US-backed framework chaired by President Donald Trump.
