Halwara Airport Terminal Damaged by Storm Weeks After Opening

A district inquiry will probe whether construction or oversight failures left the new terminal vulnerable to heavy rain and high winds.

Overview

  • A severe thunderstorm late on Saturday caused sections of the false ceiling and roof panels to dislodge and allowed water to leak into the Halwara civil terminal, prompting staff and passengers to share video and photos online.
  • Airport director Jagir Singh and Ludhiana deputy commissioner Himanshu Jain said there were no injuries and that technical teams have begun immediate repairs while airport operations are being kept running.
  • The deputy commissioner has ordered a formal inquiry and assigned the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Jagraon, to assess the full extent of the damage and report back to the district administration.
  • Political leaders have publicly demanded accountability, with opposition figures blaming poor construction and asking for action against the PWD and the contractor that abandoned the project before the department finished work.
  • The terminal, built as an expansion of Halwara Air Force Station at about ₹54 crore and handling four Air India flights a day since May 15, faces renewed scrutiny over project delays, contractor abandonment, and whether state oversight met construction standards.
