Halle Elephant Family to Move to Tierpark Berlin in 2026

The relocation follows Halle’s plan to rebuild its elephant facilities through 2029, which will leave the zoo without elephants during construction.

Overview

  • Pori, her daughter Tana, and the younger elephants Tamika, Elani (also reported as Elami), and Simon are slated to transfer as a five-animal family group.
  • The move was agreed by Bergzoo Halle, Tierpark Berlin, and the European Endangered Species Programme for African elephants.
  • Tierpark Berlin’s new facility is described as one of Europe’s most modern, offering about 20,000 square meters of space, capacity for roughly 21 elephants, and a project cost near €60 million.
  • Tierpark officials expect the family could arrive by spring or early summer 2026, though final dates have not been set.
  • Halle is starting a major reconstruction of its elephant area in 2026 and says stall capacity would remain too limited for future offspring even after completion, so no elephants are expected there until at least 2029.
