Overview
- The Hall of Fame board approved the reforms on Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, and they will apply to the Class of 2027 with the first in-person vote scheduled for early February 2027.
- The selection committee is being reduced from 50 members to a 28-person panel made up of 25 voting selectors and three non-voting alternates, with identities to be announced after current members are notified.
- Selectors will no longer be assigned by NFL team market; the new panel will be largely at-large members plus one Pro Football Writers of America representative to limit local or team-linked bias.
- The separate seniors category has been eliminated so all former players compete in a single players pool, finalists will now be 13 players plus one coach and one contributor, voters may cast up to six votes, and 80% remains the threshold for induction.
- Presentations of candidates will be made by a person not on the committee, the contributor definition is broadened to include full football résumés, and the Hall says the overhaul followed a 2½-year review and was prompted by concerns about unintended biases highlighted after the 2026 Bill Belichick vote.
