Half of Audited Indian Aircraft Flagged for Recurring Defects, Parliament Told

The disclosure does not specify how many defects are safety-critical.

Overview

  • Since January 2025, DGCA analysis of 754 aircraft across six scheduled carriers flagged 377 with recurring defects.
  • Air India Group accounted for 191 of 267 aircraft identified (nearly 72%), while IndiGo had 148 of 405 planes flagged; SpiceJet was 16 of 43 and Akasa 14 of 32.
  • Regulators reported 3,890 surveillance inspections, 56 audits, 84 checks of foreign aircraft and 492 ramp inspections last year, plus 874 spot checks and 550 night checks.
  • The ministry said DGCA technical posts rose from 637 in 2022 to 1,063 after restructuring, with a mandated e-portal to track deficiency reports and enforcement.
  • Air India said the higher count reflects precautionary fleet-wide checks and that most findings involve category D cabin items not tied to flight safety; reported in-flight technical fault incidents declined to 353 last year.
