Overview
- Race organisers cancelled stage three after a severe hailstorm struck the French Pyrenees, leaving about 15 kilometres to go and declaring no winner or podium for rider safety.
- Riders sheltered off the course and leader Tadej Pogacar was seen signalling the peloton to slow and pull over as hail, ice on the road and lightning risk made racing hazardous.
- On Tuesday Pogacar attacked with roughly 50 kilometres remaining on stage four in Andorra and rode solo to victory, finishing two minutes 39 seconds clear of the chasers.
- The stage-four win expanded Pogacar’s overall lead to about 3 minutes 21 seconds over Primoz Roglic and changed tactical prospects by giving him a large cushion before more mountain tests.
- Pogacar is chasing his first Vuelta title to complete wins in all three Grand Tours, and the race now moves into a string of summit finishes where rivals must gain time on the climbs to threaten his lead.
