H5N1 Bird Flu Confirmed at Yorkshire Poultry Farm Near Pickering

Defra imposed legal control zones to contain the outbreak.

  • Defra confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) at a commercial premises northwest of Pickering on March 3.
  • A 3 km protection zone and a 10 km surveillance zone took effect from 6:40pm on March 3 and remain in force until further notice.
  • All poultry at the affected site are being humanely culled as part of the official containment response.
  • The zones cover nearby communities including Wrelton, Cropton, Appleton-le-Moors, Sinnington and part of Aislaby, extending to Pickering, Kirkbymoorside, Newton-on-Rawcliffe and Kirby Mills.
  • Keepers within the zones face movement and record-keeping controls, and officials note H5N1 primarily affects birds with rare past human infections reported in South East Asia.
