Gwangju Police Name Suspect and Hand Stabbing Case to Prosecutors

Police tie the case to an earlier stalking report.

Overview

  • Police in Gwangju posted 23-year-old Jang Yoon-gi’s name, age, and mugshot on Thursday and transferred his case to prosecutors, with his details set to remain online through June 12.
  • Prosecutors received charges of murder, attempted murder, and preparation for murder, with investigators saying Jang planned to target a former coworker who had reported him for stalking on May 3.
  • Investigators say he failed to find the coworker and, at 12:11 a.m. on May 5, fatally stabbed a 17-year-old girl and injured a 17-year-old boy who tried to help in what police now call a premeditated attack.
  • He fled on foot and by taxi, was arrested near his home about 11 hours later, and told police he had contemplated suicide and wanted to take someone with him while saying “I’m sorry” to reporters.
  • Under South Korea’s serious-crime identity rule, a review panel approved disclosure on May 8, but publication followed a required grace period after Jang refused to consent.
