Overview
- Police acting on specific intelligence intercepted a courier in Kharghuli and recovered about 37.064–38 kg of suspected smuggled gold, which authorities value at roughly Rs 54–55 crore.
- The arrested man, identified in reports as Akshay (surname variants reported) from Sangli, Maharashtra, is in custody and is accused of working as a paid courier for previous consignments.
- Officers also seized four mobile phones, around 13–15 grams of silver, concealment bags and a small amount of cash, and they have registered a case at Latasil Police Station for further probe.
- Investigators say evidence points to a courier-driven smuggling model with suspected links to Myanmar, the Middle East and domestic hubs such as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bengaluru.
- Authorities are analysing phones and financial records and coordinating with customs and other agencies to trace handlers, recipients and the wider syndicate, with further arrests possible as the probe continues.
