Gujarat Local Body Voting Concludes With Urban Turnout Below 50 Percent

Results will be counted on April 28 after a limited re-poll in Surendranagar.

Overview

  • Following Sunday's statewide vote, the State Election Commission reported about 49 percent turnout in the 15 municipal corporations and above 60 percent in district and taluka panchayats.
  • Municipalities drew roughly 59 to 60 percent participation, with tribal districts leading turnout as high heat kept many city voters away during the middle of the day.
  • The commission ordered a re-poll on Monday at two booths in Jepar village in Surendranagar after an Electronic Voting Machine malfunction.
  • Counting on Tuesday will cover 393 bodies and about 9,200 seats with more than 41.8 million eligible voters under newly revised reservation rules that expanded OBC quotas and increased seats for women.
  • The BJP has already secured 736 seats unopposed after large withdrawals reported by rivals, and the results will show how the BJP, Congress and AAP convert that head start into control of local bodies.
