Overview
- Running through September 13, 2026, the exhibition presents 250 works from 1947 to 2006 spanning sculpture, drawing, printmaking and public projects.
- Co-produced with MoMA and SFMOMA, it is curated by Janet Bishop and Cara Manes with Geaninne Gutiérrez-Guimarães and will travel next to Fondation Beyeler in Basel.
- The presentation foregrounds her hand-woven, continuous-loop wire sculptures shaped from aluminum, brass, bronze and iron and rooted in natural growth patterns.
- Asawa’s method draws directly from basketry techniques she encountered in Mexico in 1947, a formative influence on her signature suspended forms.
- Contextual materials trace her wartime internment, the denial of a teaching credential due to anti-Japanese discrimination, studies at Black Mountain College and her recent surge in market and museum recognition.
