Guerrero Authorities Arrest Suspect in Killing of Activist Marco Antonio Suástegui

The capture is a major advance in a 16-month probe that will now move to judicial review.

Overview

  • The Guerrero State Attorney General’s Office said agents detained Harold “N” in Acapulco on June 12–13, 2026 under a warrant linked to the April 2025 killing of Suástegui.
  • Officials say the suspect is one of the alleged shooters and that investigations indicate he fired at Suástegui during the April 18, 2025 attack near the access to Playa Icacos.
  • The arrest was carried out by the Policía Investigadora Ministerial with support from state police, the Mexican Army, the National Guard, the Navy and the federal security ministry.
  • Harold “N” will be presented to a control judge who will decide his legal situation while prosecutors continue forensic and witness work and pursue any additional suspects.
  • Suástegui led CECOP community recovery and environmental campaigns opposing local development and extraction projects, and his killing highlighted persistent risks faced by grassroots leaders in Guerrero.
