Overview
- Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiracy and aiding and abetting charges tied to bringing migrants into the United States that resulted in death and serious bodily injury and faces a possible life sentence at an Oct. 8 sentencing.
- Court filings say the June 27, 2022 tractor-trailer carried 64 migrants on a roughly 156-mile drive from Laredo to San Antonio in near-90°F heat with no functioning air conditioning, and first responders pronounced 48 dead at the scene while five more died later in hospitals for a total of 53 fatalities.
- Prosecutors say Miranda-Orozco organized and arranged transportation and lodging for migrants traveling from Guatemala through Mexico to the U.S., and he is accused of arranging travel for several people who died in the trailer.
- Miranda-Orozco was arrested in Guatemala in August 2024 on a U.S. extradition request and was brought to the United States in March 2025 as part of a multiagency investigation that has produced other guilty pleas and long prison terms.
